Having a balance life, while building your small business.

Many of our forks loose sight, of a balance life why building up their small business. The dalai lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered.

Man, because he sacrifices his health in order to make money then sacrifices money to recuperate health. And then he’s so anxious about the future that he doesn’t enjoy the present; the result; being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.

One Sunday just after the Sunday morning Sunday school. In my local church, our pastor stop by me we spoke for a while about “what I was trying to accomplish in life” I mentioned that I wanted to make as much money as possible so that I could give my children the standard of living that I wanted them to have. What he told me back was incredibly prophetic just what I needed to hear.

I was blown away by his comment and thanked him profusely. For such excellent wisdom, and this wisdom as being and will always be with me.

It’s true that money is a vital life energy. But we need to understand that our children and the society at large is looking beyond our Financial statement (There need to be a balance between our net worth and our relationship with the society).

1. Stress will kill you.

When a lion is chasing a gazelle, the gazelle’s heart is pumping very fast as it runs as fast as it can to survive. Other bodily functions temporarily cease working as it tries to outrun the lion. The gazelle’s immune system shuts down, the gazelle’s reproductive system shuts down. The gazelle’s actually ages in the process.

That same happen when we feel too much stress at work and don’t treat our systems the way we should, we gained weight much faster, get  sick much easier, and our heart stops working.

The best piece of advice I have received in life was from a friend some years back. She told me “Godfrey” the second you return from your vacation open your calendar and look out 6 months and book your next vacation.

When you work too hard without taking breaks you burnout and  become incredibly unproductive. If you work four mouths for example around the clock without any breaks, then I am firm believer that it’ll take you more than three mouths to unburnout. The result can be catastrophic for your career and personal life.

We usually take a sick day because we are physically under the weather. We also need to take at least one day off per year when we are temporary “mentally” under weather.

We should take that day off because if we are too stressed out, you might have a short temper and upset your coworkers and customers.

2. You always have time for people.

You always have time for people. You always have time to exercise

You always have time for for family and friends, You always have time for rest. Telling yourself you don’t have time is just a result of poor time management.

You have time for everything everyday. Before you go to bed, make tomorrow’s calendar and make sure it includes time with family and Friends. Time to exercise, time for choosing/eating the right food, time for sleep and yes time for work.

I make time twice in every week to exercise and the results I’d untold. I am much more productive because of this. When you exercise it releases serotonin, and keeps you having a positive attitude and make you much productive.

3.don’t compromise your values.

Should I tell you one person not To partnership with? Never do business with someone that cheat on their spouse, if their closet confidant and spouse can’t trust them neither can you.

A business person that is unethical just one time is must likely to be ethnical again and again. Before partnership with someone always checker there social media(much  especially LinkedIn and do as many background checks as you can to be  sure the person is ethnical).

And always be transparent in business. Disclose all risks to your clients before doing business with them. To state the obvious, they will be incredibly upset if you don’t, as they will always find out the risks at some point, which could results in painful litigation. The only reason you might not offer 100% disclosure is in the rare situation when you can’t divulge a issue due to confidentiality reasons. If this is the case and if the investment or product/service has significant risks that outweigh the potential returns, then don’t sell the product or service. Life is too short to destroy your reputation and compromise our values.

4. Follow your passion and everything else will fall into place.

Find an occupation you love and you’ll never work a day in your life- don’t have a job you are doing instead have a passion.


When following your passion, you may have a tremendous setback in the beginning. But if you follow your passion everything will fall into place, I have seen people that their parents or those of authority over them. Get them choose a career that they did not like. Only to turn miserable later on.

Focus on what you love doing most in life. And look for ways to monetize it.  List of passionate entrepreneurs went on and on, from mark benioff of Salesforce, Christian chabot of tableau and of course Steve jobs, Richard Brandon of virgin.

There is a line between passion and productivity, people tend to be more productive on tasks they have passion about than other way round. There are many executives that have failed or have been fired, because of lack of productivity. Peoples like.

  • Wait Disney was fired by a publication he worked for.
  • Thomas Edison was fired from western Union.
  • Robert Redford was fired from an oil company.
  • J.k Rowling hated her job as an administrative assistant. She quit and found her passion, which is writing the harry potter books.

They all lost there job for lack of passion, and when they began to follow their passion there genius was altered.

Find out what your passion is and what you were put on this planet to do. What your calling? And you will always be happy on your way building your business.

5. Try to protect your family.

If you are working for someone else, you need to have a contract that clearly outlines your compensation structure in case you get hit by a bus. This way your family is taken care of.

Also when you start your company you need to take care of your family. Don’t set your company up as sole proprietorship, rather set it up as Corporation or llc. Setting up an LLC is not that expensive. And if for some crash reason your company get sued, then the liabilities end with the assets of the company and not your house.

You Don’t have to be so focused on building a career and company. And forget about your family.

6. Your spouse is your confidant and life coach.

Only your spouse can tell you if what you are wearing went out of style 50 years ago! Only your spouse can tell you that you sound too arrogant when practising a corporate presentation, only your spouse can remind you why you wanted to work in the industry you work in. Only your spouse can help you achieve your long term goals.

You and your spouse are team and you have likely gotten to where you are in life because of their mentoring. Listen to them and thank them often.  Behind almost every single successful business person is a great spouse, so listen to your spouse. Why trying to creating a balances life

My last thought.

Quite often the reason people are not successful in business is because they are insecure and believe that they are not smart enough to accomplish their goals.

You got to accept the fact that everything around you in business was created by people that are no smarter than you. I am not asking you to be arrogant. Rather, I am asking you to materially increase your confidence by accepting the fact that you are the smartest person in the world.

You are your biggest critic. But don’t let that rent space in your head, either. Please always stay confident in your abilities and if you need a pep talk have your spouse or your good friends that also have lofty goals remind you of what you are going to accomplish in life.
